Government Proposes Amendment to Legal Metrology Rules for Packaged Commodities

Move aims to enhance transparency and consumer choice

TFP Bureau, New Delhi; July 14, 2024: The Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, has put forth a proposal to amend the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. This amendment seeks to mandate the declaration of all necessary information on pre-packaged commodities intended for retail sale, excluding those meant for industrial or institutional consumers.

The proposed revision aims to establish uniform standards across packaged commodities sold in retail, aligning with the evolving market dynamics encompassing both offline and online platforms. It underscores the importance of providing comprehensive information to consumers, aiding them in making informed choices.

Currently, the Legal Metrology Rules mandate declarations such as the manufacturer’s name and address, country of origin, commodity’s common or generic name, net quantity, MRP, unit sale price, and best before/use-by dates where applicable. The amendment intends to ensure that these rules apply uniformly to packaged commodities sold in retail, except those exceeding 25 kilograms or 25 liters, with specific exclusions like cement, fertilizer, and agricultural farm produce sold in bags over 50 kilograms.

Stakeholders and the public have been invited to provide feedback on the proposed amendment by July 29, 2024. This feedback will play a crucial role in shaping the finalization of the amended rules, aimed at enhancing consumer protection and market fairness.

For further details and to provide feedback, stakeholders can visit the official government website or contact the Department of Consumer Affairs directly.
