Chief Ministers of Chhattisgarh and Odisha Collaborate to Prevent Flooding in Hirakud Dam’s Submergence Areas

Odisha’s Chief Minister Orders Controlled Water Release Following Request from Chhattisgarh

TFP Bureau, Raipur; September 12, 2024: In response to heavy rainfall and the potential threat of flooding, Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai of Chhattisgarh took decisive action by engaging in urgent discussions with Odisha Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi. The dialogue, held late last night, focused on mitigating flood risks in Raigarh district’s villages, which lie within the submergence area of Hirakud Dam.

Acting on Shri Vishnu Deo Sai’s request, Odisha’s Chief Minister Majhi promptly instructed the release of a controlled amount of water from Hirakud Dam. This measure is designed to protect over two dozen villages from potential flooding, thereby safeguarding local residents from loss of life and property.

Chief Minister Sai expressed sincere gratitude for the timely and considerate response from Odisha’s leadership. This cooperative effort marks a significant achievement in inter-state relations, with the governments of Chhattisgarh and Odisha demonstrating an unprecedented level of coordination.

Historically, severe flooding has affected these villages due to the dam’s submergence area. However, this year’s proactive and collaborative approach has prevented such disasters, highlighting a new era of effective and harmonious governance between the two states.
