TFP Bureau, New Delhi, November 15, 2024: The Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, convened a critical meeting to address the rising vacancies in District and State Consumer Commissions nationwide. Chaired by Secretary Smt. Nidhi Khare, the meeting saw participation from Principal Secretaries, Directors, and senior officials from states and Union Territories.
Secretary Khare emphasized the urgent need to fill these vacancies to ensure that consumer cases are resolved promptly. “It is imperative to prioritize the appointment of qualified candidates to vacant positions across Consumer Commissions, as swift case handling is crucial for upholding consumer rights and ensuring efficient service delivery,” she stated.
The meeting reviewed the current vacancy statistics, revealing that as of October 2024, 18 President and 56 Member posts are vacant in State Commissions, while District Commissions face shortages of 162 Presidents and 427 Members. This growing vacancy rate, despite past efforts, has sparked concern over increasing case backlogs and delays in justice for consumers.
Secretary Khare highlighted the provisions under Section 32 of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which allows additional charge to be given to neighboring District Commissions when necessary to maintain continuity in handling consumer disputes. This measure is intended as a temporary solution while efforts to fill positions continue.
The discussion concluded with a consensus among state and UT representatives on the need for immediate action. The Department of Consumer Affairs has committed to work with stakeholders to streamline the appointment process, reinforcing its dedication to an efficient and transparent consumer grievance redressal system across the country.
