TFP Bureau, Raipur, November 16, 2024: Dhudmaras, a scenic village nestled in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh, has earned global recognition as it has been selected by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for its prestigious Best Tourism Village Upgradation Program. The village, renowned for its adventure tourism, rich biodiversity, and tribal culture, is among 20 villages worldwide chosen for this initiative aimed at enhancing sustainable tourism development.
Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai congratulated the Tourism Department team, Bastar district officials, and Kanger Valley National Park staff for their collective effort in achieving this remarkable milestone. He attributed the success of Dhudmaras to the local community, whose preservation of traditional knowledge, natural resources, and culture has transformed the village into an exciting tourist destination.
Dhudmaras, located in the heart of Kanger Valley National Park, is celebrated for its stunning landscapes, traditional tribal cuisine, and a lifestyle that attracts both adventure enthusiasts and cultural tourists. The village has gained recognition for its eco-tourism potential and will now benefit from the UNWTO program, which aims to enhance tourism infrastructure, preserve cultural heritage, and improve the livelihoods of residents.
The selection of Dhudmaras is a significant boost to Bastar’s tourism profile, helping to increase international tourism to the region. This recognition comes on the heels of the village receiving the Best Tourist Village Award by the Government of India’s Ministry of Tourism on World Tourism Day, 27 September 2024, along with Chitrakot village in Bastar.
Surrounded by dense forests and traversed by the Kanger River, Dhudmaras offers a unique rural experience. The village’s residents are known for their hospitality, with many offering home stays to tourists, which not only provides accommodation but also creates employment opportunities for locals. The village youth take tourists on guided tours of the area, sharing insights into the natural beauty and culture of the region.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, the state government has made significant strides in promoting eco-tourism in Bastar, developing trekking trails, camping sites, and home-stay accommodations. The government is also focused on supporting local artisans and craftspeople, helping to generate employment and income at the grassroots level. Additionally, efforts to improve road and transport infrastructure are underway to make Bastar more accessible to both domestic and international tourists.
The Chhattisgarh government’s Forest and Tourism departments have played a key role in developing Dhudmaras as a model eco-tourism destination. In nearby villages such as Nagalsar and Netanar, local youth, through the Eco Tourism Development Committee, offer kayaking and bamboo rafting experiences on the Shabri and Kanger rivers, providing a unique adventure for tourists while generating sustainable income for the community.
The success story of Dhudmaras demonstrates the power of community involvement and government support in fostering economic and cultural development in rural areas. The village has now become an inspiration for other regions in Bastar, with eco-tourism projects expanding across the Kanger Valley National Park.
