TFP Bureau, Prayagraj, January 29, 2025: A stampede-like incident occurred at the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj early Wednesday morning, injuring several people during the ongoing religious gathering at the Sangam Ghats. The incident took place on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, with over 80 to 100 million devotees expected to gather at the event. While the official death toll has not been confirmed, many individuals were reported injured, and rescue operations are underway.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the incident, speaking with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to discuss the situation. The fair administration immediately responded, halting the Amrit Snan for the Akharas and urging the public to remain calm and avoid rumors. The injured were quickly transported to nearby hospitals within the Mela complex, where medical teams are treating them.
SSP Rajesh Dwivedi clarified that the situation was not a stampede but was caused by a large crowd, leading to some injuries. He urged devotees to remain at the open ghats and assured that the Amrit Snan ceremony would proceed peacefully. “Do not pay attention to rumors,” Dwivedi stated, emphasizing that people should bathe in the ghats that were safely open for them.
Akhada Parishad President Ravindra Puri expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating that the rush to bathe at the Sangam led to the unfortunate event. He encouraged devotees to bathe wherever clean water was available.
The situation is under control, according to DIG Vaibhav Krishna, who confirmed that the traditional Amrit Snan would continue as planned, with full cooperation from police and administrative authorities. More than 10 crore devotees are expected to participate in the event.
Meanwhile, the Fatehpur border has been sealed, and vehicles traveling to Prayagraj have been banned, with a heavy police presence to manage the crowd.
The incident highlights the immense scale of the Mahakumbh gathering, as millions of devotees converge in Prayagraj for this spiritual event. Authorities are working to ensure safety and order throughout the ongoing celebrations.
