Sonali Priyadarshini, a Mining Engineer at Vedanta BALCO, is a prime example of determination and family support. As one of the first female students in the Mining Engineering Department at Government Engineering College, Keonjhar, Odisha, Sonali’s path was not only a personal triumph but also an inspiration to others. Breaking through gender barriers in a male-dominated industry, she now stands as a proud mining engineer, encouraging the next generation of women to follow in her footsteps.
Suman Banjare: A Story of Self-Discovery and Courage
Suman Banjare, a security guard at BALCO, exemplifies the power of self-acceptance and resilience. Born as a boy, she always felt different and identified as a trans woman. After receiving support from BALCO’s gender reassignment surgery policy, Suman underwent surgery in August 2024, marking a transformative moment in her life. Her journey of self-discovery culminated in marriage in February 2025. Today, Suman works as a Security In-charge under G4S, showing the world the importance of embracing one’s true identity.
Savitri Chauhan: Breaking Gender Norms in the Driving Industry
Savitri Chauhan’s journey into driving was born out of hardship. Orphaned at a young age, Savitri faced numerous challenges, but she found a new purpose when Rajput Travels sought female drivers. Today, she drives four-wheelers for BALCO inside and outside the plant, defying the gender norms of a traditionally male-dominated profession. Savitri’s success stands as proof that women can excel in fields where they have often been excluded.
Padma Rathia: Empowering Women Through Agriculture
Padma Rathia, a beneficiary of BALCO’s CSR initiative “Mor Jal Mor Maati,” has transformed barren land into a thriving agricultural hub. Her leadership in turning her farm into fertile fields has inspired women in her community to take ownership of their agricultural future. Sanya Kumari Khute: Realizing Dreams through Education
Sanya Kumari Khute, a beneficiary of Project Panchhi, had dreams of becoming a nurse but was initially held back by financial constraints. Thanks to the support of Project Panchhi, she now studies alongside many girls in Raigarh, preparing herself for a future of independence. Her journey has sparked a new dream – to become a chemistry teacher and inspire others to follow their passions, just as she was inspired by her mentors.

Mamta Miri, a shift in-charge at BALCO, began her career on the potline, a traditionally male-only role. Despite the challenge, she excelled with hard work and determination. Pushpanjali Chauhan: From NCC to Security Leadership
Pushpanjali Chauhan, Assistant Manager of Security at Vedanta BALCO, always aspired to serve in the defense sector. After joining the National Cadet Corps (NCC), she pursued a career in security and was selected by BALCO.
