TFP Bureau, Korba, March 13, 2025: Women of self-help groups (SHGs) associated with Bharat Aluminum Company Limited (Balco) have successfully ventured into the production of herbal gulal under Balco’s Unnati project, creating a source of additional income and fostering self-reliance. The eco-friendly gulal, crafted for the Holi festival, reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable livelihoods and environmental responsibility.
Under the Unnati project, women from three SHG groups linked to Decorati Micro-Enterprise have produced over 300 kg of herbal gulal this year, generating an income of more than ₹40,000. The gulal is available in vibrant shades of blue, purple, red, yellow, pink, and violet. This initiative, which began in 2022 with Balco’s support, has become a reliable means of income for SHG members while promoting environmentally safe practices.
Unnati’s gulal is made from natural ingredients such as plant roots and leaves, ensuring that the colors are biodegradable and gentle on the skin. Two types of gulal are produced under this initiative: Unnati Eco’ and Unnati Happy.’ Unnati Eco’ is made from food color mixed with corn starch, while ‘Unnati Happy’ is crafted from vegetable-based biodegradable colors, ensuring a safe and eco-conscious Holi celebration.
“These natural colors, enriched with fragrant rose water and kewda, are free from harsh chemicals, making them safe for skin and hair,” a Balco spokesperson said. The initiative not only empowers women financially but also promotes sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, reinforcing Balco’s commitment to social responsibility and women’s empowerment.
