Rahul Gandhi may challenge Surat court verdict

April 2, 2023; TFP24,Bureau news: Congress leader and former Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi may challenge the decision of Surat court. After raising the issue in the political platform, Rahul Gandhi is likely to move the law of court against the verdict of Surat court.

A criminal defamation case was filed against the former Congress President four years back at Surat Court in connection with the case related to Congress leader’s comment on Modi surname during an election rally. He has been sentenced to two years imprisonment on March 23, 2023 by the court.

The defamation complaint was filed by Purnesh Modi who raised strong exceptions over Rahul Gandhi’s comment: “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?”

Rahul Gandhi was member of parliament representing all India Congress party from Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in Kerala. He has been disqualified from said membership a day after convicted by a Surat court in a 2019 criminal defamation case. The action came as per the established parliamentary rules and regulations.

Following the disqualification, Rahul Gandhi would not be able to contest elections for eight years unless a higher court upholds his conviction and sentence.

According to Congress sources,The legal team of the party has prepared the plea that will be filed in Surat’s sessions court. Rahul may also likely to visit Gujarat on Monday and file an appeal in the sessions court against his conviction and two-year sentence. sources said, adding that Rahul Gandhi is expected to demand a stay on the conviction in the defamation case.

The party has lodged vehement protest in the Rajghat against the development and staged a day-long Satyagrah terming the disqualification as politically motivated.
