Vedanta BALCO Implements Progressive Gender Reaffirmation Policy for LGBTQ+ Workforce

TFP Bureau New Delhi, August 8, 2023: Vedanta BALCO, a prominent name in India’s aluminum production sector and a subsidiary of Vedanta Aluminium, has taken a pioneering step towards inclusivity by introducing the innovative ‘Gender Reaffirmation Leaves and Compensation Policy’. The ground-breaking policy, tailored to support LGBTQ+ employees, is now in effect across all Vedanta Aluminium locations.

The policy represents a remarkable move within the domestic manufacturing sector, exemplifying Vedanta BALCO’s commitment to diversity and inclusion (D&I) efforts. The company aims to inspire transformative action across the Indian manufacturing landscape, traditionally known for its lack of diversity. Already, the policy has benefited two transgender professionals who have undergone gender reassignment with its support.

Under the new policy, Vedanta BALCO extends a one-time grant of 2 lakh rupees to transgender employees seeking gender reassignment surgery. This grant assists in covering the expenses related to the surgical procedure. Additionally, the policy offers a 30-day paid leave, allowing individuals the necessary time for a smooth transition and self-care. The company’s world-class residential townships, equipped with amenities, contribute to fostering a supportive environment that encourages personal growth and self-discovery.

Rajesh Kumar, CEO & Wholetime Director of Vedanta BALCO, emphasized the policy’s significance, stating, “The policy will be a gamechanger in enhancing opportunities for the transgender community, creating an enabling environment that allows them to explore new avenues for sustainable livelihoods.” Kumar’s sentiment is echoed by Vidya Rajput, a member of the Transgender Welfare Society and President of Chhattisgarh Mitwa Sankalp Samiti, who lauds Vedanta BALCO’s commitment to gender affirmation.

Across Vedanta Aluminium’s various locations, nearly 30 transgender employees are employed in diverse roles such as asset security, materials movement, and hospitality. To aid in their smooth integration into the manufacturing workforce, Vedanta BALCO follows a three-pronged approach, including skill mapping studies for identifying suitable candidates, comprehensive skill enhancement programs, and gender-sensitization sessions to address social and psychological challenges.
