3By TRP Bureau Bengaluru, August 13, 2023:05 Union Minister of State for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Electronics & IT, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar, engaged in a momentous interaction with students, startups, and prominent citizens from the state in Bengaluru. The focus of the discussion was the groundbreaking Digi Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP), a law that heralds a new era of privacy and data security for Indian citizens.
Addressing the gathering, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar traced the origins of DPDP, revealing its evolution from a concept of privacy introduced during the UPA era in 2010. The Minister noted that the DPDP reflects Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of harnessing technological opportunities while safeguarding the rights of young Indians.
Highlighting the significance of DPDP, Shri Chandrasekhar stated, “The Digital Personal Data Protection Act is a world-class legislation. This transformative law marks the end of an era of data exploitation, ensuring that Indian citizens’ privacy rights are upheld.” He further emphasized the alignment of DPDP with the upcoming Digital India Act, which will replace the outdated 22-year-old IT Act. The Digital India Act is set to comprehensively address the evolving technology landscape in the country.

Shedding light on the law’s purpose, Shri Chandrasekhar discussed its crucial role in fostering an environment of innovation and responsibility. “This bill provides clarity on how entities must handle privacy as a fundamental right. It empowers citizens to report breaches to the data protection board, which will levy substantial penalties on violators. These punitive measures will encourage platforms to adhere to the law,” he explained.
The event, dubbed “SansadDhvani,” was initiated by Member of Parliament from Bengaluru South, Shri Tejasvi Surya, and served as a platform for Shri Chandrasekhar to connect with the public. During the occasion, he also met renowned environmentalist SmtShalumaradhaThimakka, who has made remarkable contributions to Karnataka’s green cover by planting over 8,000 trees.
In conclusion, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s interaction underscored the significance of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act in shaping India’s technological landscape. As the nation marches towards a future teeming with opportunities, DPDP stands as a testament to India’s resolve to set its own standards and safeguard its citizens’ digital privacy rights.
