BALCO Concludes 3-Day “Suraksha Mahakumbh” Safety Workshop
- Ensuring a Safety-First Culture at BALCO: 3000 Participants Engage in Safety Excellence
TFP Bureau, Korba; Nov 5, 2023: Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), a prominent aluminum producer in India, wrapped up its expansive three-day safety awareness workshop named ‘Suraksha Mahakumbh’. The workshop demonstrated BALCO’s unwavering commitment to prioritizing safety and security within the organization. More than 3000 employees and business partners actively participated in this workshop, emphasizing the company’s dedication to fortifying safety in the regions where it operates.
The primary focus of the ‘Suraksha Mahakumbh’ was to inculcate a ‘safety-first’ culture, with BALCO maintaining the highest safety protocols. This initiative aimed to educate employees, business partners, and local communities about safety measures in and around BALCO’s operational areas.
The event engaged employees and business partners from various departments, including shop floors, security teams, and others. An integral segment of the workshop was the ‘Chetna Rules’, highlighting crucial safety guidelines to create a pervasive safety culture through coaching, counseling, and immediate feedback.
As a part of acknowledging exceptional dedication to safety, the event recognized 35 individuals as ‘Suraksha Mahanayaks’ (Safety Heroes). These individuals were commended for their outstanding commitment to promoting safety awareness in their respective departments and inspiring others to prioritize safety at the workplace.
Speaking about the workshop, Mr. Rajesh Kumar, CEO and Director of BALCO, emphasized, “Safety is our utmost priority at BALCO, a non-negotiable aspect of our operational excellence. Through extensive safety training and advanced technical solutions, we aim to instill a culture of safety not only within our operations but also in the broader community. In addition to the main plant premises, the workshop extended its outreach to employees at the Coal Mines in Chotia, Chhattisgarh. More than 100 employees and business partners participated in this session, receiving tailored safety guidelines for their roles in coal mining and management.
BALCO consistently raises awareness among its employees, their families, and local communities through various safety training workshops, defensive driving courses, fire safety sessions, road safety programs, and the installation of retro-reflective safety signboards. The company also conducts annual safety-focused programs during National Road Safety Month to educate its employees and the community.
To fortify its safety culture, BALCO integrates cutting-edge technologies. These include Augmented and Virtual Reality Training, Video Analytics, a Sustainability Mobile App, E-learning courses, and Digitalization for improved safety practices. The company leverages a Centralized Security Operations Centre (CSOC) for better decision-making in security, traffic, road safety, and supply chain functions. It uses real-time data monitoring, implements LED Logo Projectors, and initiatives like the Hot Spot Detection System at coal yards for strict safety measures.
Recognized for its dedication to safety, BALCO has earned numerous prestigious awards, such as the National Safety Awards (Mines), a Platinum Award in the 5th CII National Safety Practices Competition, and the Global Road Safety Award.
