Congress MLA Group Elects Dr. Charandas Mahant as Leader of Opposition

TFP Bureau, Raipur, Dec 17, 2023: Former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh and prominent BJP leader, Raman Singh, officially filed his nomination for the esteemed position of Chhattisgarh Assembly Speaker. Speaking to the media after submitting his nomination papers, Singh expressed gratitude to both political parties and the opposition for the nomination.

In his statement, Singh acknowledged the significance of the new responsibilities that lie ahead, emphasizing his commitment to protecting the sanctity of the assembly and the interests of the 90 MLAs representing the entirety of Chhattisgarh. He pledged to work towards the effective functioning of the Assembly, ensuring that all pertinent issues are addressed for the betterment of the state.

In a recent decision, the Congress MLA Group has unanimously chosen Dr. Charandas Mahant to assume the pivotal role of Leader of the Opposition.

The proposal for Raman Singh’s candidature came from former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and Leader of the Opposition Dr. Charandas Mahant on Sunday. Bhupesh Baghel, expressing confidence, declared that Raman Singh is poised to be elected Speaker unopposed. He congratulated Singh on the nomination, highlighting Singh’s extensive experience in various political roles.

Leader of the Opposition, Charandas Mahant, affirmed that there would be no opposing candidate, expressing gratitude to the high command and former Chief Minister Baghel for providing him the opportunity to serve as the Leader of the Opposition. Mahant emphasized a collaborative approach, pledging to champion the causes of the common people and farmers from the streets to the legislative House.

While discussing the cabinet formation, Mahant offered a sarcastic remark, hinting at uncertainties and the short duration of the cabinet tenure. He stated that the session would commence only after Dr. Raman Singh is elected as the Speaker, indicating the beginning of the entire process. Regarding the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Mahant expressed confidence, asserting that there is no substantial challenge for their party in the upcoming polls.
