MUBSS Mushkan Sanitary Pads: A Revolutionary Boost for Women’s Health in Surguja District

Cooperative Society, With Adani Foundation’s Support, Transforms Menstrual Hygiene Landscape

TFP Bureau, Ambikapur; Dec 29, 2023: In a groundbreaking initiative supported by the Adani Foundation, the Mahila Multipurpose Cooperative Society (MUBSS) in the Udaipur development block of Surguja district is reshaping the narrative on women’s health. The Sanitary Pad Production Center, exclusively managed by women from MUBSS, is not only empowering local women through employment but is also championing awareness on menstrual hygiene among girls and women in the villages.

As part of the menstrual hygiene campaign launched by the Adani Foundation, an awareness drive is underway in 12 government schools, targeting communities in Parsa, Salhi, Basen, Tara, Ghatbarra, Fatehpur, Shivnagar, and Dandgaon. The center, operational since 2018, has been instrumental in creating employment opportunities for women from nearby villages and producing approximately 3000 sanitary pads per month. These pads, named ‘Mushkan,’ are not only distributed for free in schools but are also available at a 25-30% lower cost compared to market prices, thanks to the cooperative’s efforts.

To ensure easy access, vending machines for sanitary pads are being installed, accompanied by incinerator machines in schools for proper disposal. The initiative aims to provide a convenient way for girls and teachers to access sanitary pads while contributing to environmental sustainability.

Mrs. Rajni Srivastava, the head of the center, stated, “Around 3000 sanitary pads are produced every month, and Mushkan sanitary pads are only about 25-30% cheaper than those available in the market. The Foundation, as part of its CSR, also distributes them free of cost during health awareness camps in nearby villages and schools.”

Sant Bai, a worker at the production center, shared her personal journey, highlighting the positive impact on her life. “I am very happy that along with earning a good income, I have now become self-reliant,” she said.

Smt. Amita Singh, President of MUBSS, emphasized the broader impact, stating, “To empower women and improve their health and well-being, the sanitary pad manufacturing unit and sanitary pad disposal equipment are helping to achieve these goals in mine-affected villages.”

The success of this women-led cooperative society extends beyond sanitary pad production, encompassing various income-generating activities, with an annual income surpassing Rs 1.5 crore. The Parsa East Kanta Basan mine has also received recognition for its commitment to safety, environmental protection, and social cooperation in education, health, livelihood upgrading, and infrastructure development.

This initiative stands as a testament to the transformative power of collaborative efforts in enhancing women’s health and empowerment in the Surguja district.
