TFP Bureau, Korba; January 3, 2024: Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), a prominent aluminium producer in India and a unit of Vedanta Aluminium, has successfully concluded a 15-day energy conservation drive, signaling a collective commitment to a sustainable future in the new year. The initiative, launched on National Energy Conservation Day (December 14), focused on promoting energy-saving practices within the plant premises and surrounding communities.
The drive featured a range of informative and participatory activities held across various locations, including the plant premises, local communities, and schools. With active participation from over 1000 people, the initiative aimed to raise awareness and encourage active involvement in energy conservation.
As part of the drive, BALCO organized a special session on energy conservation for its employees, featuring Prof. Ramasamy Mahendiran, a Certified Energy Auditor at the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Government of India. Prof. Mahendiran shared industrial best practices to enhance energy efficiency and optimization. The company also conducted quizzes and competitions among employees, fostering awareness about reducing energy consumption in workspaces. A carpooling drive was initiated to encourage employees to commute together, reducing overall energy consumption. Employees were also invited to submit innovative solutions for energy-efficient operations.
Extending its impact beyond the plant, BALCO organized drawing competitions in local schools, aiming to instill a spirit of sustainability among students. Community awareness sessions were conducted in nearby villages, providing insights into easy energy-saving practices for daily life.

Aligned with its vision of ‘Zero Harm, Zero Waste, and Zero Discharge,’ BALCO is exploring greener options, such as using biofuels in heavy vehicles and electric forklifts within its plant premises. The company has also integrated graphitization into its pot lining design, enhancing electrical conductivity for more energy-efficient operations.
BALCO’s dedication to responsible operations has earned accolades, including the ‘Sustainable Factory of the Year’ Award from Frost and Sullivan and the ‘GreenCo Silver’ rating in the CII Green Company Rating System, underscoring its commitment to a greener future.
