Chhattisgarh’s Tableau “Bastar Ki Aadim Jan Sansad: Muria Darbar” Earns Praise at Republic Day Parade

Enthralling Depiction of Ancient Democratic Institution Wows Audience on Kartavya Path

TFP Bureau, New Delhi, January 26, 2024: Chhattisgarh’s tableau, titled ‘Bastar Ki Aadim Jan Sansad: Muria Darbar,’ garnered a remarkable response as it gracefully traversed the grand Kartavya Path during the Republic Day parade today.

The tableau offered a captivating glimpse of an ancient democratic institution still thriving in Bastar, showcasing the unique ‘Muria Darbar.’ This cultural marvel has become a focal point during the culminating ceremony of Bastar Dussehra, the world’s longest festival spanning 75 days.

French President Emmanuel Macron, the Chief Guest of the 75th Republic Day celebrations, along with President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, extended a warm welcome to the tableau with waving hands as it passed by the saluting base.

The audience was captivated by the tableau’s portrayal of a 600-year-old tribal custom of decision-making, met with thunderous applause. The intricate depiction of terracotta and bell metal art added to the visual spectacle.

The Chhattisgarh tableau aligns with the theme ‘India is the Mother of Democracy,’ as per the Government of India. Muria Darbar, functioning as the tribal people’s parliament, stands as a testament to grassroots democracy in Chhattisgarh, dating back to 1876 and persisting in the Bastar division even 75 years post-independence.

The roots of unity and democratic ethos in Bastar trace back to an era devoid of kingship, where decisions were collectively made by tribal communities. In a significant historical reference, at Bada Dongar, the symbol of kingship was a lemon known as “Limau Raja.”

Adding cultural vibrancy to the tableau, folk artists from Chhattisgarh performed the traditional Parab dance in front of the tableau, further enhancing the visual spectacle and leaving a lasting impression on the spectators.
