Over 5 Lakh Individuals Benefit from Social Welfare Initiatives in FY23

TFP Bureau, New Delhi; February 29, 2024: Vedanta Aluminium, India’s leading aluminium producer, celebrated World NGO Day by highlighting its impactful collaborations with over 20 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), resulting in transformative changes in the lives of nearly 5 lakh individuals across India in the fiscal year 2023. With a cumulative positive impact on over 6.3 lakh individuals, Vedanta Aluminium’s social interventions align with community needs, government developmental initiatives, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Operating one of the world’s largest aluminium smelters in Jharsuguda, an alumina refinery in Lanjigarh, and India’s iconic BALCO aluminium producer in Korba, Vedanta Aluminium is actively driving socio-economic progress in rural India. Their initiatives focus on reducing multidimensional rural poverty, creating opportunities for enterprise and employment, and promoting education, healthcare, livelihood, rural infrastructure, and grassroots sports, art & culture, with special emphasis on women & child development.

NGOs play a pivotal role in Vedanta Aluminium’s community empowerment initiatives, leveraging their expertise in program development, deep rural penetration, and insights into local social structures. These partnerships operate on scientific principles, conducting need assessments, developing programmatic approaches, and conducting regular impact assessments to ensure efficacy and relevance.

Mr. John Slaven, CEO of Vedanta Aluminium, emphasized the company’s commitment to holistic community development, citing a 45% increase in community investments between FY21 and FY23. He highlighted the strategic partnerships with NGOs as instrumental in delivering impactful social welfare initiatives aimed at inclusive growth and sustainable development.

Collaborations with NGOs such as Punaruthan Voluntary Organisation, Sarthak Jan Vikas Sansthan, Vedanta Foundation, and Action For Food Production (AFPRO) have yielded significant results across various domains, including healthcare, menstrual health and hygiene, skill development, farming practices, and sports training.

Dr. Jacob John, Executive Director of AFPRO, commended the partnership with Vedanta Aluminium for its transformative impact on farmers and sustainable livelihoods. Meanwhile, Mr. Jugal Pattnayak, Managing Director of Mahashakti Foundation, highlighted the entrepreneurship initiatives empowering rural women and contributing to community development.
