Cricket Match Promotes Inclusivity; Voter’s Guide Launched for PwDs and Seniors

TFP Bureau, New Delhi; March 17, 2024: In a groundbreaking collaboration between the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), an Exhibition Cricket Match between the Indian Deaf Cricket Association (IDCA) Team and the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) team was staged at Karnail Singh Stadium in New Delhi on March 16, 2024. This unique initiative aimed to foster voter education and inclusivity, bringing together persons with disabilities (PwDs) and young voters under one banner.

During the event, Ms. Sheetal Devi, a distinguished Para Archer and recipient of the prestigious Arjuna Award, was declared the National Icon in the PwD category. The match, attended by Chief Election Commissioner Shri Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners Shri Gyanesh Kumar and Shri Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, celebrated inclusivity and empowerment.

CEC Shri Rajiv Kumar reiterated the ECI’s commitment to promoting inclusivity by acknowledging the achievements of the Indian Deaf Cricket team, who clinched the T20 Champions Trophy in UAE. He pledged the possibility of future collaborations between mainstream cricket teams and the IDCA.

The spirited match witnessed a crowd of 2500 spectators, including PwDs and young voters, cheering on both teams. The DDCA emerged victorious, winning by 69 runs. However, the resounding message of inclusivity and unity prevailed throughout the event, echoing the sentiment of

‘Nothing like voting, I vote for sure.’

The event also marked the launch of a dedicated Voter’s Guide for PwDs and Senior Citizen Electors, providing essential information on polling station accessibility and procedural details, ensuring a seamless voting experience. These initiatives align with the ECI’s commitment to enhancing voter participation among diverse demographics.

The event concluded with a stirring performance by the ‘Shining Star Music Band,’ featuring visually impaired musicians, and a rendition of the national anthem in sign language by students from the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC).

Through such initiatives, the Election Commission of India aims to foster a truly representative and robust democracy, ensuring that every voice is heard in the electoral process.
