TFP Bureau, New Delhi, March 30, 2024: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), under the Ministry of Communications, has issued a stern advisory cautioning citizens against fraudulent calls claiming to be from DoT officials. These calls, which threaten individuals with mobile number disconnection or allege misuse in illegal activities, pose a significant risk to personal security and privacy.
In addition to traditional phone calls, the advisory also addresses the proliferation of WhatsApp calls originating from foreign mobile numbers, particularly those with codes like +92, impersonating government officials. Cybercriminals behind these calls seek to extract personal information to facilitate cybercrimes and financial frauds.
The DoT emphasizes that it does not authorize any individual to make such calls on its behalf and urges citizens to exercise vigilance and refrain from disclosing any sensitive information if they receive such calls.
To combat this growing threat, the DoT encourages citizens to report instances of fraud through the ‘Chakshu-Report Suspected Fraud Communications’ facility available on the Sanchar Saathi portal (http://www.sancharsaathi.gov.in). Proactive reporting plays a crucial role in preventing the misuse of telecom resources for illicit activities, including cybercrimes and financial frauds.
Furthermore, citizens are advised to utilize the ‘Know Your Mobile Connections’ feature on the Sanchar Saathi portal to verify mobile connections registered in their name. Any unauthorized or unnecessary connections should be promptly reported to mitigate the risk of fraudulent activities.
For individuals who have fallen victim to cybercrimes or financial frauds, the DoT provides recourse through the cyber-crime helpline number 1930 or the website http://www.cybercrime.gov.in. Prompt reporting of such incidents enables authorities to take swift action and safeguard individuals from further harm.
The advisory serves as a timely reminder for citizens to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to protect themselves against fraudulent communications and cyber threats in an increasingly digital world.
