TFP Bureau, April 2, 2024: Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU) had the honor of hosting Hon’ble Mr. Justice G. Raghuram, Former Director of the National Judicial Academy and Distinguished Jurist Professor, for a distinguished lecture on March 28, 2024. The lecture, themed ‘Role & Responsibilities of a Trial Lawyer in the Dispensation of Justice,’ was held at the University Auditorium.
In his engaging keynote address, Hon’ble Mr. Justice G. Raghuram provided a comprehensive overview of the current landscape of legal practice. With insights peppered with quotes from prominent jurists, he examined the role of litigation lawyers in an adversary legal system, emphasizing the tension between zealous representation and the pursuit of justice.
Highlighting the ethical challenges faced by trial lawyers, Justice G. Raghuram lamented the normative indifference and value sterility prevalent within the legal profession. He underscored the need for greater emphasis on legal ethics in law school curricula and the importance of ethical role models in shaping the conduct of aspiring lawyers.
Moreover, Justice G. Raghuram emphasized the pivotal role of trial lawyers as advocates for marginalized voices, both inside and outside the courtroom. He outlined the essential attributes of a successful trial lawyer, including exceptional communication skills, thorough preparation, and unwavering ethical integrity.
The event, part of the HNLU Distinguished Jurist Professor Programme (H-DJP), aimed to foster dialogue between legal luminaries and the university community. Speaking at the event, Prof. (Dr.) V. C. Vivekanandan, Vice Chancellor of HNLU, lauded the invaluable contribution of trial lawyers in safeguarding their clients’ rights and resolving disputes through negotiation and mediation.
The lecture was seamlessly organized, with Dr. Deepak Srivastava, Dean of UG Studies, delivering the Welcome Address, and Dr. Vipan Kumar, Registrar (I/c), extending the Vote of Thanks. Ms. Garima Panwar, Assistant Professor, adeptly anchored the proceedings.
The HNLU Distinguished Jurist Professor Programme seeks to enrich the academic discourse by fostering collaboration between legal luminaries and the university community.
