TFP Bureau, New Delhi, April 4, 2024: In a significant display of operational readiness, the Indian Air Force (IAF) recently executed operations from the Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) in the northern sector of the Kashmir valley, as part of the ongoing exercise Gagan Shakti-24.
Utilizing a fleet of Chinook, Mi-17 V5, and ALH Mk-III helicopters, a substantial number of troops were airlifted and air-landed during nighttime operations. This exercise underscores the IAF’s commitment to maintaining readiness and operational efficacy in challenging environments.
The IAF plans to replicate similar drills in coordination with state governments across the country for the activation of ELF in other sectors. These exercises will involve various fixed and rotary-wing platforms, necessitating meticulous planning and coordination with civil administration through a Whole-of-the-Nation-Approach (WNA).
Emergency Landing Facility operations offer a unique opportunity for IAF aircraft to conduct operations from restricted landing surfaces, enhancing their operational versatility. Additionally, these facilities serve as crucial hubs for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations during natural calamities, providing vital aid and relief to affected areas.
The capability to conduct night operations and transfer troops from such surfaces will significantly augment the operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces, further fortifying the nation’s defense infrastructure.
