TFP Bureau,Raipur, April 8, 2024: In a commendable initiative aimed at empowering women prisoners with essential legal knowledge, the Pro Bono Club of Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU), in partnership with the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), orchestrated a transformative awareness camp at the Central Jail in Raipur.
Led by Dr. Parvesh Kumar Rajput, Faculty Convenor of Pro Bono, and Dr. Kaumudhi Challa, Faculty Convenor of the Legal Aid and Social Services Committee, along with eight dedicated students, the event focused on elucidating the critical provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), as well as available remedies for the women prisoners.
Under the guidance of team leader Sarah Samuel, the student team underscored the significance of prisoners’ rights and emphasized the necessity of basic amenities within the correctional facility. Engaging with approximately 50 women inmates, including convicts and undertrials, the camp addressed pressing issues such as access to justice, living conditions, and the right to dignified existence.
To reinforce key points and facilitate future reference, pamphlets were distributed among the participants. Moreover, the team conducted a comprehensive survey to gain insights into individual cases, offering tailored legal guidance and support to the incarcerated women.
The success of the event was augmented by the invaluable support extended by the jail authorities, particularly Ms. Kushboo Mishra, as well as the active participation of Shri. Praveen Mishra (Secretary DLSA, Raipur) and two DLSA paralegals, who provided steadfast assistance throughout the camp.
The awareness camp stands as a significant stride towards equipping women prisoners with knowledge about their legal rights and avenues for seeking justice. This collaborative endeavor exemplifies a commitment to social justice and empowerment among marginalized communities, reaffirming HNLU’s dedication to legal education and societal welfare.
