NTPC Launches New Edition of Girl Empowerment Mission to Foster Gender Equality

Flagship CSR initiative aligns with Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme

TFP Bureau, New Delhi; April 9, 2024: NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated power company, is set to unveil the latest edition of its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM). This program, in alignment with the Government of India’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao initiative, is dedicated to addressing gender inequality by empowering girls, nurturing their aspirations, and providing them with opportunities to thrive.

Scheduled to commence from April 2024, the new edition of GEM will enroll nearly 3,000 meritorious children from underprivileged backgrounds across 42 identified locations of the power sector PSU. This expansion will bring the total number of beneficiaries under the Mission to over 10,000.

From its inception as a pilot project in 2018 with three locations and 392 participants, the GEM Mission has evolved into a nationwide movement. Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the initiative has consistently grown, with a total of 7,424 girls benefiting from the program to date. In 2023 alone, 2,707 girls participated in the workshop held across 40 locations of NTPC, spanning 16 states of India.

The primary focus of the GEM Mission is to empower girls through various interventions aimed at identifying and nurturing their leadership qualities. The comprehensive workshop covers topics such as health, hygiene, safety, fitness, sports, and yoga, fostering holistic development among participants.

The GEM Workshop has received widespread acclaim for its holistic approach to skill development, confidence-building, and mentorship. By equipping girls with essential tools and providing unwavering support, NTPC aims to pave the way for a brighter future for upcoming generations. The program seeks to empower girls to become agents of change, positively influencing their families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
