Election Commission Mandates Pre-Polling Day Publication of Political Ads in Print Media

Ads Must Be Certified by Media Committees; Misleading Ads Prohibited

TFP Bureau, Raipur, April 17, 2024: The Election Commission of India has issued extensive guidelines for the Lok Sabha Election-2024, including measures to prevent the publication of misleading advertisements in print media. As per the directive, political advertisements must be published a day before polling day, with pre-certification required.

Chief Electoral Officer, Smt. Reena Babasaheb Kangale, outlined the circular issued by the Election Commission, emphasizing the necessity of pre-polling day publication for the three phases of elections in Chhattisgarh. In the first phase on April 18 and 19, second phase on April 25 and 26, and third phase on May 6 and 7, advertisements must receive prior certification from the District or State Level Media Certification Committee before being published in print media.

The Commission has instructed state and district-level media certification committees to expedite decisions on certification applications and clarified that applications must be submitted at least two days before the proposed publication date. This measure aims to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

Chief Electoral Officer Smt. Kangale highlighted that in case of misleading advertisements published before polling day, affected parties or candidates have no means of rectification or rebuttal. Therefore, pre-polling day publication of advertisements is crucial for an independent, transparent, and fair election process.
