India Showcases Leadership in Renewable Energy at World Hydrogen Summit 2024

Secretary Bhupinder Singh Bhalla highlights India’s prowess in renewable energy and green hydrogen production on the global stage

TFP Bureau, New Delhi, May 17, 2024: Secretary Bhupinder Singh Bhalla of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Government of India, took center stage at the World Hydrogen Summit 2024 in Rotterdam, Netherlands, on May 15, 2024. His address spotlighted India’s strategic vision and capabilities in renewable energy and green hydrogen production, outlining the nation’s ambitious plans and achievements in this critical domain.

Secretary Bhalla emphasized the comprehensive approach of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, encompassing pilot projects, research and development initiatives, and skill development programs. He stated,

“This holistic strategy demonstrates the government’s unwavering dedication to fostering innovation, collaboration, and capacity-building across the hydrogen value chain.”

Furthermore, he highlighted India’s commitment to nurturing a vibrant ecosystem for green hydrogen technologies through pilot projects and R&D efforts, aiming to drive the emergence of cutting-edge solutions and best practices.

Underlining India’s position as a global leader in renewable energy affordability, Secretary Bhalla emphasized the nation’s competitive pricing, making it an attractive destination for domestic and international investments in renewable energy projects. He also lauded India’s integrated grid infrastructure as a crucial facilitator for the seamless integration of renewable energy sources into the national energy mix, enhancing grid stability and optimizing efficiency.

Secretary Bhalla hailed India’s pool of skilled engineers as pivotal for the successful execution of renewable energy and green hydrogen projects. He noted,

“With world-class expertise in engineering, procurement, and construction services, India boasts a robust talent pool capable of executing projects efficiently.”

This availability of skilled personnel, coupled with competitive costs, enhances India’s competitiveness in the global market for green hydrogen production.

India’s ambition to emerge as a leading exporter of green hydrogen was underscored by Secretary Bhalla, who asserted the nation’s clear vision and commitment to sustainable energy practices. He expressed India’s determination to play a pivotal role in the global hydrogen economy by scaling up production and capitalizing on emerging opportunities in the international market.

Highlighting India’s capability to meet any scale of production demand for green hydrogen, Secretary Bhalla cited the nation’s robust renewable energy deployment strategy outlined in its Nationally Determined Contributions. He informed the audience that approximately 43% of India’s current installed electricity capacity is from non-fossil-fuel sources, with projections indicating a rise to 50% by 2030.
