TFP Bureau New Delhi; May 24,2024: In a significant stride towards ensuring food security and farmers’ welfare, the ongoing wheat procurement for the RMS 2024-25 has surpassed last year’s figures, reaching a commendable 262.48 LMT. This achievement not only highlights the robustness of the procurement process but also underscores the government’s commitment to supporting agricultural communities across the nation.
Empowering Farmers: MSP Outflow Reaches Rs. 59,715 Crores
The procurement drive has benefitted a staggering 22.31 lakh farmers, providing them with much-needed support and stability. With a total MSP outflow amounting to Rs. 59,715 crores, this initiative is not just about grain collection but also about empowering farmers and strengthening rural economies.
Regional Contributions: Punjab, Haryana, and More
The bulk of the wheat procurement stems from five key states, namely Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Together, these states have contributed significantly to the procurement drive, with Punjab leading the charge followed closely by Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
Steady Progress in Rice Procurement
Simultaneously, the procurement of rice is progressing steadily, with 728.42 LMT of paddy, equivalent to 489.15 LMT of rice, already procured from 98.26 lakh farmers during the KMS 2023-24 period. This concerted effort has resulted in a total MSP outflow of approximately Rs. 1,60,472 crores, further bolstering the agricultural sector.
Ensuring Food Security: Comfortable Stock Levels
With the combined stock of wheat and rice in the Central Pool surpassing 600 LMT, the nation is well-positioned to meet its food grain requirements under various welfare schemes and market interventions. This surplus underscores the government’s proactive approach in ensuring food security for all, particularly in times of need.
