TFP Bureau Korba; June 6, 2024: Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), a unit of Vedanta Aluminium, celebrated World Environment Day with a series of initiatives aimed at promoting environmental sustainability. Partnering with the Chhattisgarh Forest Department, BALCO launched a plantation drive in the BALCO township, planting over 200 trees. This effort is part of a broader commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation.
Representatives from the Chhattisgarh Environment Conservation Board (CECB) joined the plantation drive, which was conducted at multiple locations near the plant. The event rallied around the slogan “Our Land, Our Future, we are @Generation Restoration,” uniting employees and community members in the cause.
To engage younger generations, BALCO organized a ‘Make Your Own Ready-To-Sow Seed Balls’ workshop for children, who then planted them at nearby Nand Ghars—modern anganwadi centers supported by Vedanta Limited. The workshop aimed to educate participants on the importance of planting seeds to create green spaces.
Mr. Rajesh Kumar, CEO & Director of BALCO, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to sustainability:
“At BALCO, sustainability is at the core of our operations. We are proactively working towards achieving Net-Zero Carbon by 2050. Our initiatives extend to nearby communities, fostering a culture of sustainability that unites all stakeholders in the pursuit of a greener future.”
Ashish Khailwar, Sub-Divisional Officer of the Chhattisgarh Forest Department, emphasized the importance of ongoing environmental efforts:
“Tree plantation is a sustainable practice, not a one-day activity. Collaborating with organizations like BALCO is essential for achieving a sustainable future. Their goal of planting 1.5 lakh trees this year exemplifies their commitment.”
BALCO also recognized employees and business partners who contributed significantly to environmental conservation with the “Green Champion of the Year” award. The week featured competitions encouraging environmental conservation efforts.
BALCO’s sustainability initiatives for FY24 include:
– Restoration of 42 farm and community ponds for groundwater recharge
– Planting over 120,000 saplings around its operations
– Organizing nature workshops and photography competitions
– Successful afforestation on 150 hectares of reclaimed ash dykes
BALCO continues to educate and engage local communities, employees, and children in sustainable practices, fostering a sense of environmental responsibility.
