India Moves Forward with Green Ammonia Production under National Green Hydrogen Mission

SECI Initiates Competitive Bidding for 5.39 Lakh MT/Annum Capacity

TFP Bureau, New Delhi; June 9, 2024: In a significant step towards advancing the country’s green energy agenda, the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has issued a Request for Selection (RfS) for Green Ammonia Producers. This initiative, under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), aims to enhance the production and supply of Green Ammonia through cost-based competitive bidding.

The bidding process covers a total capacity of 5.39 lakh metric tonnes (MT) per annum of Green Ammonia. This capacity will be allocated through an e-bidding followed by an e-Reverse Auction process. The produced Green Ammonia will primarily be supplied to fertilizer companies.

The SIGHT Programme, implemented by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), has previously allocated 4.12 lakh MT per annum of Green Hydrogen production capacity and 1.5 GW per annum of Electrolyzer manufacturing capacity. SECI has been designated as the implementing agency for this scheme.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched on 4 January 2023 with a budget of Rs. 19,744 crore up to FY 2029-30, aims to significantly decarbonize the economy, reduce fossil fuel imports, and position India as a leader in Green Hydrogen technology and markets. This mission supports India’s ambition to achieve self-reliance in clean energy and contribute to the global clean energy transition.
