TFP Bureau, New Delhi; June 30, 2024: India reclaimed the T20 World Cup trophy in a stunning display, defeating South Africa by 7 runs in a nail-biting final. This victory marks India’s third triumph in the T20 format and fourth World Cup win overall, positioning them among cricket’s elite nations.
Led by Captain Rohit Sharma, India set a competitive target of 176 runs after a shaky start that saw them lose three early wickets for just 34 runs. Akshar Patel’s heroic innings of 47 runs off 31 balls, including four sixes, revived India’s innings and set the stage for their total.
In response, South Africa chased valiantly with Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller leading the charge. However, India’s bowlers tightened their grip in the crucial overs. Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah’s pivotal wickets stalled South Africa’s momentum, ultimately restricting them to 169 runs.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the team’s achievement in a congratulatory message, saying, “Today, 140 crore countrymen are feeling proud of your brilliant performance. You have not just won a World Cup, but you have also won everyone’s heart.”
