TFP Bureau, Raipur, July 1, 2024: Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai today released a booklet detailing the new criminal laws prepared by the Home Department at his residential office. Marking the significance of the day, he stated, “July 1, 2024, is a historic day for our country. The Central Government has implemented three new criminal laws nationwide today, replacing those enacted by the British 150 years ago. This change reflects the strong will of our Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Union Minister of Home Affairs Shri Amit Shah.”
The Chief Minister praised the Home Department officials for their efforts in raising awareness and providing training on the new laws. He emphasized that these laws, namely the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023, prioritize justice over punishment and represent a significant step towards fulfilling the Indian government’s promise of justice and security for all citizens.
Chhattisgarh Police has taken the initiative to facilitate understanding of the new laws through this booklet, which will serve as an important reference document for police officers and investigators. The new laws came into effect today and aim to provide justice to all citizens by replacing outdated colonial-era laws.
Additional Chief Secretary Shri Manoj Pingua and DGP Shri Ashok Juneja provided updates on the state-level implementation of the new laws. They highlighted the need for interdepartmental coordination, thorough investigation, and decisive action to achieve the objective of delivering justice. The officials reported that two FIRs and one death case have already been registered under the new laws, emphasizing the importance of coordination between various departments.
The new legislation includes provisions prioritizing women’s safety and justice, addressing terrorism and organized crime, and protecting India’s sovereignty, unity, and integrity. These reforms introduce victim-centric legal measures, incorporate scientific techniques in investigations, and update regulations for digital and electronic evidence. The laws also revise court procedures to enhance efficiency and fairness. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023 replace the Indian Penal Code 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act 1872.
Chief Minister’s Secretaries, Shri Rahul Bhagat and Shri Basavaraju S., along with other officials from the Home Department, were present at the event.
