TFP Bureau, Raipur; July 7, 2024: The Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath was celebrated with great pomp and fervor in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Dev Sai participated in the grand event held at the Jagannath temple in Gayatri Nagar, Raipur.
Before the commencement of the Rath Yatra, the idol of Lord Jagannath was ceremoniously placed on the chariot, and the Chharaphara ritual, which involves cleaning the path with a golden broom, was performed. Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Dev Sai carried out this traditional ritual, marking the beginning of the procession.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Shri Sai extended his heartfelt congratulations to the people of Chhattisgarh on the occasion of the Rath Yatra. He emphasized the festival’s significance, stating,
“This festival is as important to Chhattisgarh as it is to Odisha. Mahaprabhu Jagannath is revered by the people of both states equally, and his grace is felt profoundly in Chhattisgarh.”
Shri Sai highlighted the importance of Lord Jagannath as the protector of farmers, noting that his blessings ensure rainfall, bountiful crops, and prosperity for farmers. He prayed for a bumper crop this year and wished for peace, prosperity, and happiness for all residents of the state.
Chhera Pahara Ritual Performed by CM
Following tradition, Chief Minister Shri Sai performed the Chhera Pahara ritual, using a golden broom to sweep the path and then led the Rath Yatra by placing the idol of Lord Jagannath on the chariot. This ritual is a significant aspect of the Rath Yatra, symbolizing humility and devotion.
Rath Yatra Reflects Deep Cultural Ties with Odisha
The Rath Yatra in Chhattisgarh mirrors the grand celebrations in Odisha, reflecting the deep cultural ties between the two states. The event included special worship of Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra. According to the priests, this tradition symbolizes the unbreakable bond between Utkal culture and the culture of South Kosal.
It is believed that Lord Jagannath’s original abode is Shivrinarayan-Teerth in Chhattisgarh, from where he moved to Jagannath Puri. The historical and cultural connections between these regions are celebrated and honored during this vibrant festival.
The Rath Yatra in Raipur not only showcases the rich cultural heritage of Chhattisgarh but also strengthens the bonds with neighboring Odisha, celebrating a shared tradition that spans centuries.
