BALCO Launches ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ Campaign to Promote Community Cleanliness

TFP Bureau, Korba , October 2024: Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), a subsidiary of the Vedanta Group, has initiated a comprehensive campaign to promote cleanliness and environmental responsibility within the community, coinciding with Swachhata Diwas. The initiative, part of the Government of India’s ‘Swachhata Hi Seva 2024’ mission, aims to raise awareness and engage local residents in maintaining a clean environment.

The company successfully reached out to approximately 2,800 community members through the Swachhata Abhiyan, organizing various programs to emphasize the importance of cleanliness. Key activities included training sessions for community-based organizations focused on effective waste management and source separation. Over 90 grassroots workers and members participated in these training sessions, enhancing their knowledge and skills related to cleanliness practices.

Additionally, BALCO’s environmental team conducted awareness talks that specifically targeted women from Self Help Groups (SHGs), educating them on best environmental practices.

To further engage the community, local artisans and trained adolescent leaders presented puppet shows and street plays centered around the theme of Swachh Bharat, highlighting the significance of cleanliness in everyday life. In a collaborative effort with the Municipal Corporation, BALCO organized a major cleanliness drive that saw over 200 employee volunteers and community members come together to clean a public park. The participants took a Swachhata Pledge, showcasing their commitment to maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings.

In an effort to inspire the youth, BALCO also held ‘Swachhata Talks’ in 21 government and private schools. A total of 1,042 students attended these sessions, where they learned about personal hygiene, community cleanliness, and the significance of the 3Rs—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. The students engaged in creative activities by making models and posters to promote income generation from waste. Both students and teachers took the ‘Swachhata Pledge’ to uphold cleanliness standards in their respective environments.

Through these initiatives, BALCO aims to foster a culture of cleanliness and environmental stewardship within the community, aligning with national efforts to create a cleaner and healthier India.
