TFP Bureau, Raipur, October 16, 2024: The Election Commission has announced the schedule for upcoming elections in Jharkhand and Maharashtra, with the terms for current assemblies ending on January 5, 2025 and November 26, 2024 respectively.
In Jharkhand, the elections will be conducted in two phases, with nominations for the first phase opening on October 18 and the second phase on October 22. Voting is scheduled for November 13 and November 20. The state has a total of 81 assembly seats, requiring a majority of 41 for control. In the 2019 elections, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) coalition won 30 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 25 seats, and the Congress obtained 16. The Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (JVM) won 3, and the All Jharkhand Students Union Party (AJSUP) took 2 seats, with 5 seats going to independent candidates and others.
In Maharashtra, the nomination process will also begin on October 22, with voting for the first phase set for November 13 and the second phase on November 20. The state boasts 288 assembly seats, where a majority of 145 is needed. In the 2019 elections, the BJP won 105 seats, while its ally, the Shiv Sena, secured 56. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won 54 seats, and the Congress claimed 44. Independents and others accounted for 13 and 16 seats, respectively.
Notably, voters aged 85 and above will have the option to vote from home, enhancing accessibility for senior citizens. In Raipur South, voting will occur on November 13, following the vacancy created by Brijmohan Agarwal’s election to the Lok Sabha. In the last assembly elections, the BJP won this seat by a margin of 67,719 votes.
Counting of votes for both states will take place on November 23, as voters prepare to make their voices heard in these critical elections.
