TFP Bureau, Raipur, October 19, 2024: The long-awaited demand of the people of Surguja is set to be fulfilled as Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the Maa Mahamaya Airport, Darima, on 20 October 2024. This development will connect the tribal-dominated Surguja region to air services, benefiting residents across Surguja, Jashpur, Surajpur, Balrampur, Korea, and Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur districts.
The airport’s inauguration is expected to significantly boost tourism and commercial activities, while expanded transportation facilities will create new employment opportunities in the region. Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate the airport virtually from Varanasi at 4 p.m. on 20 October. The event will be attended by Chhattisgarh Governor Shri Ramen Deka, Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, and other prominent officials and dignitaries.
Major Infrastructure Investment
The Maa Mahamaya Airport project, completed at a cost of around ₹80 crore, has transformed the Darima airstrip, originally built in 1950, into a modern airport. The airstrip, located 13 km from Ambikapur, was upgraded with a runway extended from 1500 to 1800 meters, and a new apron to accommodate two ATR 72 aircraft. Key infrastructure improvements include an expanded perimeter road, upgraded terminal facilities, and enhanced security measures.
Boost for Tourism in Surguja
The introduction of air services is expected to provide a significant boost to tourism in Surguja, a region known for its scenic beauty and historical sites. Popular tourist destinations include the Rajarani Temple, Baba Bamleshwar Temple, Kailash Caves, and the Chhattisgarh hill station of Mainpat. The region also has important religious sites, such as the Mahamaya Temple and various Jain temples.
The virtual inauguration will be broadcast live, with the event starting at 3 p.m. at the airport.
