Biogas Plant to be Established in Jamul, Durg

Tripartite Agreement Signed Between Bhilai Municipal Corporation, Chhattisgarh Biofuel Authority, and Bharat Petroleum

TFP Bureau, Raipur, October 21, 2024: In a major step toward sustainable energy and waste management, a concession agreement was signed on Monday between the Bhilai Municipal Corporation, Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL). This agreement paves the way for setting up a biogas plant in Jamul, Durg, aimed at converting urban solid waste into compressed biogas (CBG).

This initiative aligns with Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai’s vision for a developed and eco-friendly Chhattisgarh. The biogas plant will be established under BPCL’s investment of Rs 60 crore and will be located at the trenching ground in Jamul, under Bhilai Municipal Corporation.

The plant is expected to process approximately 150 metric tonnes of solid waste daily, generated by Bhilai and neighboring municipal corporations in the Durg district. The project will not only promote biofuel production but will also create an estimated 30,000 man-days of employment annually, both directly and indirectly.

A byproduct of the biogas plant, organic manure, will support organic farming, contributing further to the region’s environmental sustainability. The use of compressed biogas is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, moving Chhattisgarh closer to achieving net-zero carbon emissions.

This agreement follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed earlier this year on March 13, 2024, in the presence of Chief Minister Shri Sai and Deputy Chief Minister Shri Arun Sao. The MoU involved Municipal Corporations from Raipur and Bhilai, the Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA), and BPCL to establish two biogas plants. The concession agreement signed this week marks the next step in realizing this ambitious project.

The signing event was attended by key officials, including Durg Collector Ms. Richa Prakash Chaudhary, CBDA CEO Mr. Sumit Sarkar, BPCL Biofuel Head Mr. Anil Kumar P, and Bhilai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Mr. Bajrang Dubey.
