TFP Bureau, Raipur, October 25, 2024: The nomination rally for Congress candidate Akash Sharma in the South Assembly by-election attracted thousands of supporters, marching from Congress Bhawan at Gandhi Maidan to the Collector’s office. The event saw enthusiastic participation from youth, women, and elders alike, signaling strong grassroots support for Sharma, who has been described as a “young and combative” leader.
State Congress President Deepak Baij criticized the BJP’s choice of candidate, Sunil Soni, claiming the party has no new faces to present and is facing backlash for selecting an “inactive” individual. He asserted that Sharma’s nomination reflects a shift towards change, stating, “This time it is the turn of change. The youth will win, and the people have decided.” Baij dismissed allegations from the BJP suggesting Sharma is an outsider, emphasizing that he is a native of Chhattisgarh with deep roots in the community.
Leader of the Opposition Dr. Charandas Mahant echoed these sentiments, highlighting Sharma’s popularity and the unity among Congress supporters since his announcement as the candidate. “By making Akash win, the voters of the South will choose a hardworking young MLA,” he stated, emphasizing the candidate’s commitment to the community.
Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel also took the stage, addressing issues such as rising inflation and crime under the BJP government. He criticized the BJP’s internal discord and their decision to nominate Soni, questioning his qualifications and highlighting the community’s dissatisfaction. “Those who call Akash Sharma an outsider should reflect on their own origins,” Baghel remarked.
In his address, Akash Sharma appealed to the voters of the South Assembly, asserting, “No person living in South Assembly is an outsider. I am a resident of South Assembly; my village is Arjunda, and my roots are planted here.” He called for unity against divisive politics, urging voters to reject the BJP’s narrative of insiders and outsiders.
The program, conducted by General Secretary Malkit Singh Gaidu, featured a robust lineup of Congress leaders and former officials, demonstrating a united front as they rallied behind Sharma’s candidacy. The high turnout and vocal support reflect a significant moment in the campaign as the South Assembly prepares for the upcoming by-election.
