TFP Bureau, Raipur, November 9, 2024: In a landmark announcement at the Indian Road Congress convention in Raipur, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari declared that Chhattisgarh’s road network would reach American standards within two years, with projects worth Rs 20,000 crore approved for development. Key initiatives include upgrading four national highways to four lanes, building multiple flyovers in Raipur, and expanding single and two-lane roads across the state.
Emphasizing the role of strong infrastructure in economic growth, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai stated that roads are critical to building a robust economy. In support of eco-friendly practices, Gadkari advocated for innovations like bamboo crash barriers and biofuel, highlighting their potential for sustainability and farmer empowerment. The minister also called for engineers to focus on high-quality, cost-effective work that aligns with India’s aim to become a self-reliant, 5 trillion-dollar economy.
The projects unveiled include the four-laning of national highways from Dhamtari to Jagdalpur, Raipur to Balodabazar-Sargarh, Katghora to Ambikapur, and Bilaspur to the Odisha border, along with Rs 900 crore from the Central Road Fund for additional road construction. Approved flyovers will improve traffic flow at major intersections in Raipur, including Sarona, Udyog Bhawan, Telibandha, and Dhaneli junction. Gadkari also greenlit a one-time improvement for three roads to bolster connectivity.
Highlighting engineers’ role as “Vishwakarmas of the nation,” Gadkari urged their expertise in advancing quality projects that save public funds. He promoted the use of bamboo crash barriers over steel, positioning this eco-friendly solution as both a cost-efficient alternative and a boon for farmers. Further, he cited the production of biofuels and biovitamins from straw as sustainable practices already underway in states like Meghalaya and Haryana, which could benefit Chhattisgarh.
Addressing road safety, Gadkari stressed the need for enhanced engineering and technical solutions to reduce accidents and prioritize safety in road design.
Chief Minister Sai noted Chhattisgarh’s fast-paced development, expressing concern about environmental impact as the transport sector contributes to 40% of national pollution. He advocated for balanced growth through road networks that support economic goals and sustainability. The Chief Minister also expressed gratitude for the Rs 11,000 crore investment approved for the state, marking the occasion as Chhattisgarh celebrates its 25th year.
The Chief Minister’s vision aligns with India’s goal to be a developed nation by 2047, aiming to double Chhattisgarh’s GSDP by 2028. He highlighted the strategic role of road networks in rural connectivity, green energy use, and quality improvements in road construction as the state targets economic expansion.
Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao and Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Ajay Tamta, echoed support for road infrastructure as a pillar for national and state development, with Sao pointing to Chhattisgarh’s natural assets and swift growth trajectory.
During the event, three new guidelines and a manual on road construction and safety were launched, along with a commemorative souvenir for the Indian Road Congress convention.
