TFP Bureau, Korba, December 12, 2024: Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (BALCO), a leading name in India’s aluminium industry and a subsidiary of Vedanta Aluminium, celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with impactful initiatives promoting inclusivity and empowerment. The event, hosted at Divya Jyoti School for the differently-abled in Korba, Chhattisgarh, reached over 100 specially-abled adolescents.
BALCO employees volunteered to conduct activities aimed at raising awareness about menstrual health and hygiene, emphasizing inclusivity in health education. A standout initiative was the ‘Stitch My Own Pad’ campaign, where adolescents were taught to make reusable cloth pads. This sustainable practice not only addressed menstrual hygiene management but also encouraged discussions to break taboos and misconceptions surrounding menstruation, fostering confidence and healthier practices.
In a significant move to enhance accessibility, BALCO introduced braille-based learning modules designed to educate specially-abled adolescents about menstrual health. The celebrations also included cultural performances by employees and students, showcasing stories of resilience and talent, which inspired the participants and reinforced the spirit of inclusivity.
Highlighting BALCO’s commitment, Mr. Rajesh Kumar, CEO and Director, stated, “At BALCO, we are committed to building a culture of inclusivity both in the workplace and in the community. We believe in celebrating unique abilities and creating opportunities that foster meaningful change. Through initiatives like these, we aim to break barriers and drive equality for all.”
Reflecting on the experience, Mr. Dipam Nath, Assistant Manager at BALCO, shared, “Volunteering at BALCO has been profoundly inspiring. My visit to Divya Jyoti School was particularly impactful, witnessing how the students’ remarkable determination transcends their physical challenges. Their synchronized dance performance, executed flawlessly despite their inability to hear the music, was a humbling and unforgettable experience.”
BALCO continues to lead in fostering diversity and inclusivity through its workplace practices. The company’s inclusive hiring has welcomed three specially-abled individuals and 18 transgender individuals into its workforce. Regular sensitization workshops and training programs further underscore BALCO’s dedication to understanding and mutual respect, creating a community and workplace that celebrates abilities and champions equality.
