TFP Bureau, Raipur, December 25, 2024: Doctors at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Smriti Hospital in Raipur have made medical history by successfully removing a rare five-kilogram mediastinal tumor lodged near the lungs and heart of a 52-year-old woman. The groundbreaking surgery was performed by a team of skilled specialists from the Heart, Chest, and Vascular Surgery Department, saving the patient’s life after months of debilitating symptoms.
The patient had been struggling to breathe properly for over two months due to the tumor, which compressed her heart and lungs, shifting the heart to one side and pressing against her windpipe. Prior to the surgery, she required high-pressure ventilator support (BiPAP) and had been turned away by other institutions citing the complexity and risk of the procedure.
A team led by cancer surgeon Dr. Ashutosh Gupta and heart and chest surgeon Dr. Krishnakant Sahu meticulously planned and executed the high-risk surgery. The operation was supported by a heart-lung machine on standby, ready to provide life support in case of complications involving the heart or pulmonary arteries.
The tumor, identified as a malignant sarcoma after a biopsy, weighed approximately five kilograms, making it one of the largest such cases reported in the region. Following the surgery, the patient recovered successfully and was discharged from the hospital. She has been referred to the oncology department for follow-up chemotherapy treatment.
Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal congratulated the Ambedkar Hospital team on this medical achievement, emphasizing that such expertise marks a milestone in the state’s healthcare capabilities. “This surgery not only saved a life but also demonstrates the advanced medical skills and dedication of our doctors. Soon, facilities for open-heart surgery and coronary bypass surgery will also be available here,” he said.
The successful removal of this mediastinal tumor not only underscores the expertise of Ambedkar Hospital’s surgical team but also highlights the growing capabilities of Raipur as a hub for advanced medical care in India.
