TFP Bureau, New Delhi, February 19, 2025: India and Argentina have taken a significant step toward deepening cooperation in lithium exploration and mining with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL), a public sector enterprise under India’s Ministry of Mines, and the Provincial Government of Catamarca, Argentina.

The agreement was formalized during a high-level meeting in New Delhi between Union Minister for Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, and H.E. Raúl Alejandro Jalil, Governor of Catamarca. Discussions focused on strengthening bilateral collaboration in the mining sector, particularly in securing lithium—a crucial component for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage.

Argentina, home to vast lithium reserves within the ‘Lithium Triangle’, is a key partner for India in diversifying its critical mineral supply chain. The meeting also reviewed ongoing lithium exploration projects by Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. (KABIL) & Greenko in Catamarca and explored opportunities for increased Indian investment in Argentina’s mining industry.

Senior officials from both countries discussed policy frameworks, regulatory mechanisms, and sustainable mining practices to ensure a long-term, mutually beneficial partnership. The collaboration is expected to enhance India’s access to lithium resources, boost domestic battery manufacturing, and support India’s transition toward clean energy.

With the signing of this MoU, both nations have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening strategic ties in the mining sector, paving the way for future investments, long-term supply agreements, and joint ventures that will strengthen India’s position in the global lithium market.
