TFP Bureau, Korba, March 4, 2025: Bharat Aluminum Company Limited (BALCO), part of the Vedanta Group, has inaugurated a food court called “Unnati Chaupal,” a key initiative under its Unnati Project, aimed at empowering women from Self Help Groups (SHGs). The event was led by Ms. Manisha Kumar, President of the Balco Ladies Club. Located at the Balco Cooperative in Sector-1, the food court will operate from 4 pm to 8 pm, Monday to Saturday, offering a range of delicious dishes to the local community.
The food court is an extension of the ‘Chhatisa’ micro enterprise unit established under the Unnati Project. It serves as a platform for women to showcase their culinary skills and entrepreneurial abilities. Prior to the launch of Unnati Chaupal, the women underwent extensive training in preparing traditional and fast-food items such as sandwiches, vada, mangodi, khaja, and saloni. The project has provided them with essential skills in financial management, business, and leadership.
In addition to the food court, these trained women also operate the “Unnati Cafe on Wheels,” a mobile food truck serving the BALCO plant. The Chhatisa unit has received FSSAI certification, ensuring high standards of food quality and hygiene.
A Taste of Innovation and Tradition
Unnati Chaupal’s menu includes a variety of options, from the “Stitch a Sandwich” range—featuring Bombay Masala and classic grilled sandwiches—to Manchurian at China Town, and popular chaat and golgappas from Old Delhi. Tea lovers can enjoy unique offerings such as desi kadak chai, strawberry chai, chocolate chai, and a variety of flavored teas. The food court draws inspiration from the traditional community gatherings known as ‘Chaupals,’ where locals come together to share ideas over snacks and tea.
Project Unnati: A Commitment to Women’s Empowerment
The Unnati Project is focused on uplifting women by fostering entrepreneurship and creating sustainable livelihoods through self-help groups. To date, over 5,800 women across 534 SHGs have benefited from the project’s training programs. The project also includes the “Unnati Cafe on Wheels” food truck and “Chai Bihaan” tea shop, providing women with opportunities to run their own businesses.
Implemented in partnership with the NGO GPR Strategies and Solutions, the initiative is helping women gain financial independence and empowerment, allowing them to stand on their own feet and become contributing members of the economy.
