Indian Air Force Joins Multinational Exercise BRIGHT STAR-23 at Cairo Air Base, Egypt

TFP Bureau, New Delhi; August 27, 2023: The Indian Air Force (IAF) took off today with a contingent for its maiden participation in Exercise BRIGHT STAR-23, a biennial multilateral tri-service exercise set to unfold at Cairo (West) Air Base, Egypt. The exercise is scheduled to run from August 27 to September 16, 2023.

Marking a historic milestone, the IAF’s involvement in Ex BRIGHT STAR-23 will witness the convergence of contingents from the United States of America, Saudi Arabia, Greece, and Qatar. The Indian Air Force contingent comprises five MiG-29, two IL-78, two C-130, and two C-17 aircraft. Engaging in the exercise are personnel from the IAF’s Garud Special Forces, along with members of Numbers 28, 77, 78, and 81 Squadrons. Additionally, IAF’s transport aircraft will facilitate the airlift of approximately 150 personnel from the Indian Army.

The prime objective of this exercise is to refine the planning and execution of joint operations. Beyond strengthening camaraderie across borders, such interactions serve as a catalyst for advancing strategic relationships between the participating nations. IAF contingents participating in international flying exercises serve as envoys donning flight suits.

The alliance between India and Egypt has been exceptional, marked by deep cooperation. In the 1960s, both nations jointly undertook aero-engine and aircraft development projects, while Indian counterparts provided training to Egyptian pilots. The recent visits of the Chief of Air Forces of both countries, Indian Defence Minister, and the Prime Minister to Egypt have further solidified this relationship. Moreover, the two nations have elevated their joint training endeavors through regular military exercises.

As the IAF embarks on this noteworthy venture, it not only demonstrates its prowess but also elevates diplomatic relations through its active involvement in international exercises. This marks another stride towards fostering global security cooperation.
