Excise Department’s Stringent Campaign Curbs Illegal Liquor Activities During Election Period
TFP Bureau, Raipur, Oct 29, 2023: As the Election Commission of India implemented the Model Code of Conduct for the Chhattisgarh Assembly General Election-2023 on October 9, 2023, the Excise Department has intensified its crackdown on illegal liquor-related activities in compliance with the election guidelines. Secretary cum Excise Commissioner, Shri Mahadev Kavre, has directed flying squads and district officers to conduct thorough inspections at distilleries, bottling units, breweries, and liquor shops to combat illegal storage and transportation of liquor.
During the period from October 9 to October 26, 2023, the department executed 2038 raids and registered 929 cases, leading to the arrest of 825 individuals. Seizures during this phase amounted to 11,833 liters of liquor valued at Rs 35.36 lakh, alongside confiscated Mahua Lahan and Ganja valued at Rs 59.90 lakh. Furthermore, 45 vehicles, with a cumulative market value of Rs 1.01 crore, were apprehended during this stringent enforcement period.
The Excise Department has fortified vigilance through 31 checkposts in border districts, preventing the transportation of illegal liquor from neighboring states. This endeavor extends beyond road checks, encompassing inspections at railway stations, trains, bus stands, and buses, conducted in collaboration with the Railway Police and State Police.
To facilitate the reporting of illegal liquor activities, the Excise Department operates toll-free number 14405, ensuring the confidentiality of complainants’ identities. This proactive campaign aims to curb illegal liquor activities during the election period, emphasizing the department’s commitment to maintaining a lawful and controlled environment within the state.
