Coal Ministry Sets Ambitious Production Targets for Commercial/Captive Mines

TFP Bureau, New Delhi; January 10, 2024: The Ministry of Coal has unveiled its ambitious production targets, aiming to generate 186.63 million tonnes (MT) of coal exclusively from captive and commercial coal mines during the fiscal year 2024-25. The production targets are projected to rise further, reaching 225.69 million tonnes in FY 2025-26, with an ultimate goal of touching 383.56 million tonnes by FY 2029-30, as outlined in the Ministry’s current plans.

As of December 31, 2023, the Ministry reported that 50 captive and commercial coal mines are actively producing. Out of these, 32 mines are allocated to the power sector, 11 to the non-regulated sector, and seven mines allocated for coal sales. Since the initiation of the Commercial Coal Mines Auction in 2020, six mines with a cumulative peak rated capacity (PRC) of 14.87 MT have commenced production within three and a half years.

In December 2023 alone, the total coal production from captive and commercial coal mines reached 14.04 MT, indicating a significant increase of 38% from the 10.14 MT reported in the same month the previous year.

The period from April 1 to December 31, 2023, witnessed remarkable growth in coal production and dispatch from captive and commercial coal blocks. The total coal production during this period stood at 98 MT, showcasing the sector’s robust performance and commitment to meeting the nation’s energy demands.
