Successful Diversion of Chenab River Marks Milestone at Ratle Hydro Electric Project in J&K

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs sanctioned the project in January 2021, with a total estimated cost of Rs. 5281.94 crores.

TFP Bureau, New Delhi, January 30, 2024: A significant achievement has been recorded at the Ratle Hydro Electric Project in Jammu & Kashmir, as the Chenab River was successfully diverted through diversion tunnels at Drabshalla in Kishtwar district on January 27, 2024, at 11:30 A.M. This crucial step marks a milestone in the 850 MW hydroelectric project, setting the stage for the isolation of the dam area at the riverbed. The diversion facilitates the commencement of excavation and construction activities for the dam, expediting the overall project timeline and minimizing potential delays.

The River Diversion ceremony, inaugurated by CMD, NHPC Shri R.K. Vishnoi, was witnessed by Principal Secretary (PDD), Government of J&K, Shri H. Rajesh Prasad; Chairman, RHPCL, Shri I. D. Dayal; MD, JKSPDC, Shri Pankaj Mangotra; Directors of NHPC; CEO, RHPCL, Sh. A.K. Nauriyal, along with other officials from NHPC and the Government of J&K.

The Ratle Project, situated on the Chenab River in Kishtwar District of J&K, boasts an installed capacity of 850 MW and is being executed by Ratle Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (RHPCL). This corporation operates as a Joint Venture between NHPC Limited and the Government of J&K, with a shareholding ratio of 51:49 percent, respectively. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs sanctioned the project in January 2021, with a total estimated cost of Rs. 5281.94 crores.

The successful diversion of the Chenab River is a critical development that aligns with the project’s commitment to meet its scheduled commissioning date of May 2026. This accomplishment underscores the collaborative efforts of the involved authorities and signifies a significant stride toward the successful realization of the Ratle Hydro Electric Project.
