PM Modi Unveils Space Infrastructure Projects at Vikram Sarabhai Space Center

Inaugurates Projects Worth Rs 1800 Crores; Reviews Gaganyaan Progress

TFP Bureau, New Delhi; February 27, 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, unveiling three significant space infrastructure projects collectively valued at around Rs 1800 crores. The projects comprise the SLV Integration Facility (PIF) at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, the ‘Semi-cryogenics Integrated Engine and Stage Test facility’ at ISRO Propulsion Complex in Mahendragiri, and the ‘Trisonic Wind Tunnel’ at VSSC, Thiruvananthapuram.

During his visit, PM Modi also assessed the progress of the prestigious Gaganyaan Mission and conferred ‘astronaut wings’ to the four astronaut-designates: Group Captain Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair, Group Captain Ajit Krishnan, Group Captain Angad Pratap, and Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla.

Vision for India’s Space Endeavors

Addressing the audience, PM Modi hailed India’s historic achievements in space exploration, emphasizing the nation’s burgeoning influence on the global stage. He lauded the astronaut-designates as embodiments of trust, courage, valor, and discipline, representing India’s aspirations and progress.

PM Modi outlined India’s ambitious space goals, including plans to land an Indian astronaut on the Moon, establish a space station by 2035, and explore Venus. He projected significant growth in India’s space economy, positioning the country as a global space hub in the coming decade.

Focus on Sustainability and Social Benefits

Highlighting the societal benefits of space technology, PM Modi commended ISRO’s efforts in agriculture, weather forecasting, disaster management, navigation, education, and health. He acknowledged the pivotal role of women scientists in India’s space program and underscored the sector’s contribution to building a developed India.

Infrastructure Projects and Gaganyaan Mission Progress

PM Modi praised the technical capabilities demonstrated by the inaugurated space infrastructure projects, emphasizing their role in enhancing India’s space capabilities. He commended ISRO’s preparations for the Gaganyaan Mission and conveyed his best wishes to the astronaut-designates and ISRO’s staff involved in the project.

Historic Moment for Indian Space Exploration

The Prime Minister’s personal presentation of wings to the astronauts marked a historic milestone for India’s space exploration endeavors. Sharing his sentiments on the occasion, PM Modi took to social media to express pride in the astronaut-designates, symbolizing the hopes and aspirations of 140 crore Indians.

The Gaganyaan Mission, India’s maiden human space flight program, reflects the nation’s commitment to scientific advancement and societal development. PM Modi concluded by praising the dedication and vision of ISRO scientists, envisioning a prosperous and technologically advanced future for India.

The visit witnessed the presence of dignitaries, including the Governor of Kerala, Shri Arif Mohammad Khan, Chief Minister of Kerala, Shri Pinrayii Vijayan, Union Minister of State, V. Muraleedharan, and Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman ISRO, Shri S Somnath, among others.
