TFP Bureau, Raipur; July 8, 2024: The sowing of Kharif crops is progressing rapidly in Chhattisgarh, with substantial progress reported across various districts. As per the latest data from the Agriculture Department, Kharif crops including paddy, cereals, pulses, oilseeds, and sugarcane have been sown in 23,01,960 hectares, achieving 47 percent of the season’s target. Paddy alone has been cultivated in 20,27,370 hectares, followed by maize in 96,600 hectares, and a variety of other crops across the state.
In total, the state aims to sow Kharif crops in 48,63,000 hectares during the 2024 season, including extensive areas dedicated to paddy, maize, pulses, oilseeds, and vegetables. The progress in crop sowing underscores the state’s commitment to agricultural growth and food security.
Distribution of certified seeds and fertilizers
In conjunction with the sowing efforts, the distribution of certified seeds has reached a significant milestone. So far, 7,85,813 quintals of certified seeds have been disbursed to farmers, covering 80 percent of the total seed demand in the state. This includes substantial quantities of paddy, maize, pulses, soybean, and other essential Kharif crops, ensuring farmers have access to quality inputs for optimal yields.
Meanwhile, the distribution of chemical fertilizers continues apace, with 8,61,606 metric tonnes already provided to farmers. Urea, DAP, NPK, and other fertilizers crucial for crop nourishment have been distributed across the state, meeting 63 percent of the season’s fertilizer distribution target.
Financial support through agricultural loans
To support agricultural activities, the state has disbursed agricultural loans amounting to Rs 4,965.70 crore so far in the Kharif season 2024. This financial assistance aims to facilitate farming operations and ensure farmers have the necessary resources to enhance productivity.
Ensuring quality control in agricultural inputs
In a proactive measure, the Agriculture Department continues to monitor the quality of seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides rigorously. Over 5000 samples of seeds, 3700 samples of fertilizers, and 777 samples of pesticides have been collected for quality testing. This initiative aims to maintain high standards and safeguard farmers against substandard agricultural inputs.
Significantly, recent inspections have revealed 71 samples of seeds, 18 samples of fertilizers, and 19 samples of pesticides falling below quality standards. Immediate actions, including banning the sale of substandard lots and issuing notices to concerned firms, have been undertaken to uphold quality assurance.
The concerted efforts in sowing, seed distribution, fertilizer supply, and quality management underscore Chhattisgarh’s commitment to agricultural development and ensuring farmers’ welfare during the crucial Kharif season. These initiatives are poised to bolster agricultural productivity and contribute to overall rural prosperity in the state.
