Vishnu Deo Sai joins traditional Karma dance at Raigarh festival; highlights education, employment and welfare initiatives for tribal communities

TFP Bureau, Raigarh, October 16, 2026: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Thursday said tribal communities have a glorious history of courage, self-respect and sacrifice, while their traditions of nature conservation offer valuable lessons to the world.

Addressing the Karma Puja Festival organised by the Oraon Samaj Vikas Samiti in the Himgir region of Chhattisgarh and Odisha at Sarasmal village in Tamnar block of Raigarh district, Sai said reverence for nature and the conservation of water, forests and land were deeply rooted in tribal culture.

The Chief Minister offered prayers to Bhagwan Karam Dev, Bhagwan Shiv and Mata Parvati, seeking happiness, prosperity and well-being for the people of the state. He later joined community members in the traditional Karma dance, playing the mandar to its rhythmic beats alongside men and women participating in the celebrations. The gathering welcomed him with a traditional Gajmala.

Sai said the Karma festival symbolised gratitude towards nature, the joy of a new harvest and the spirit of community life. Such celebrations, he said, help preserve cultural identity and connect younger generations with their roots, languages, traditions and social values.

Tribal heroes’ legacy must reach younger generations

Highlighting the contribution of tribal communities to India’s freedom struggle and cultural heritage, Sai recalled the sacrifices of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh, Gundadhur and other tribal heroes who fought to protect their homeland, dignity and rights.

He said it was the collective responsibility of society to familiarise younger generations with their courage and contributions. The Chief Minister also noted that former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had established a separate Ministry of Tribal Affairs, providing an institutional framework for tribal welfare and development.

Referring to the representation of tribal communities in public life, Sai said President Droupadi Murmu’s tenure as the country’s highest constitutional authority and his own position as Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh reflected their growing participation in governance.

He also highlighted the tribal museum in Nava Raipur as an important initiative to familiarise young people with tribal history, lifestyles, traditions, folk arts and the contributions of tribal leaders. The government, he said, was committed to preserving cultural heritage while ensuring that tribal communities benefited from modern development opportunities.

Education key to social progress

Emphasising the importance of education, Sai urged young people to set ambitious goals, work hard and make full use of available opportunities in higher education, competitive examinations and employment.

He said the state government was working to improve educational opportunities for tribal students. Prayas Residential Schools are helping students prepare for competitive examinations, while modern study facilities, including Nalanda campuses, are being expanded to provide better learning environments.

The Chief Minister also encouraged students to seek admission to reputed national-level institutions. He said the capacity of the hostel for tribal students in Delhi had been increased to 200 seats to support those pursuing higher education and preparing for competitive examinations.

Sai said education could help young people establish themselves in fields such as administration, medicine, engineering, technology, industry and entrepreneurship, accelerating progress for their families and communities.""

Focus on employment and basic amenities

The Chief Minister said the state government was also focusing on skill development and employment through recruitment, employment fairs and industrial investment. He urged young people to remain informed about competitive examinations, training programmes, employment fairs and self-employment schemes.

He said initiatives such as the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan and the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) were helping extend housing, roads, drinking water and other basic amenities to tribal-dominated areas and Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups.

Ensuring that families in remote tribal areas were not left out of development programmes remained a priority, he said.

Rajya Sabha member Devendra Pratap Singh, addressing the gathering, said tribal communities had preserved their culture, traditions and folk arts across generations. He urged young people to prioritise education and strengthen social unity, describing both as essential to community progress.

Oraon Samaj Vikas Samiti president Panat Ram Bhagat highlighted the community’s traditional language, folk arts, cultural practices and nature-linked customs. He called for continued efforts to protect cultural identity and social unity.

The festival featured colourful group performances by women and men dressed in traditional attire, dancing to the beats of the mandar, mridang and dhol. The performances reflected the community’s devotion, connection with nature and enduring folk traditions.
