CM Vishnu Deo Sai watches third T20I in Naya Raipur, says international cricket will inspire young women and boost tourism, trade and employment

TFP Bureau, Raipur, October 20, 2026: Chhattisgarh marked a milestone in its sporting history as it hosted an India-Zimbabwe Women’s T20 International series for the first time, with Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai attending the third match at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Naya Raipur on Tuesday.

Welcoming players from both teams, Sai congratulated them on reaching the international stage through their talent and hard work. He said the series would inspire young people, particularly girls in Chhattisgarh, to pursue sports and aspire to compete at national and international levels.

The Chief Minister described the event as more than a cricket series, saying it reflected the state’s growing presence on the international sporting map. Watching leading women cricketers compete in their own state, he added, would encourage girls to develop confidence, pursue their ambitions and bring recognition to Chhattisgarh and the country.

Free entry for women and girls

Sai said free entry had been arranged for women and girls during the series to encourage greater participation in sports and give them an opportunity to watch international-level athletes in action.

He said the state government was working to create a sports-friendly environment by expanding infrastructure, improving access to training and resources, and providing athletes with better opportunities to compete.

The government’s objective, he added, was to ensure that talented players from Chhattisgarh could develop their skills and gain exposure to national and international sporting standards without having to look beyond the state for opportunities.""

Naya Raipur emerging as a sporting destination

The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium as a major sporting facility in the state. He said the decision to lease the stadium to the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Association had helped create opportunities for hosting national and international cricket tournaments.

Naya Raipur has hosted international matches involving New Zealand and Australia in the recent past, along with two Indian Premier League matches featuring Royal Challengers Bengaluru, he said. The India-Zimbabwe women’s series adds another milestone to the city’s growing sporting calendar.

Sai said the government aimed to establish Naya Raipur not only as a modern, well-planned capital but also as a leading destination for major sporting events. Efforts were being made to expand sports facilities, make better use of existing infrastructure and attract more national and international competitions.

Sporting events to support tourism and employment

Sai said major sporting events could generate economic activity beyond the stadium by bringing players, officials and spectators into the state. Tourism, hospitality, transport, local businesses and other service sectors could benefit from the increased visitor numbers, creating opportunities for employment and livelihoods.

He added that hosting international events would also strengthen Chhattisgarh’s visibility and reputation as a destination capable of organising competitions at a high level.

Focus on nurturing sporting talent

Referring to the national push to promote sports under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister said Indian women athletes were increasingly bringing laurels to the country through their performances on the global stage.

The Chhattisgarh government, he said, was committed to identifying and nurturing local talent and providing young athletes with platforms to progress in their chosen disciplines.

Extending his best wishes to the Indian and Zimbabwean teams, Sai said the series would promote sportsmanship, healthy competition and friendship between the two countries. He expressed confidence that the event would encourage more young people, especially girls, to take up sports and become part of Chhattisgarh’s sporting future.

Representatives of the Chhattisgarh State Cricket Association and the Board of Control for Cricket in India, members of the sporting community, government officials and cricket enthusiasts attended the match.
