TFP Bureau, New Delhi, July 16, 2025: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved an increased delegation of financial powers to NTPC Limited, allowing the power giant to invest up to \u20b920,000 crore\u2014well above the previous \u20b97,500 crore limit\u2014in its renewable energy arm, NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), and its subsidiaries including NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NREL). This move is aimed at accelerating the expansion of renewable energy capacity to 60 gigawatts (GW) by 2032.<\/p>\n
The enhanced authority will enable NTPC and NGEL to fast-track the development of renewable energy projects nationwide, bolstering India\u2019s power infrastructure and advancing reliable, 24\/7 electricity access for citizens. This step also aligns with India\u2019s ambitious energy transition goals, as the country already derives 50% of its electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources\u2014achieving this milestone five years ahead of schedule under the Paris Agreement.<\/p>\n
NTPC, India\u2019s leading central public sector power utility, is committed to adding 60 GW of renewable capacity by 2032, supporting the nation\u2019s target of 500 GW non-fossil energy capacity by 2030 and its broader goal of net-zero emissions by 2070.<\/p>\n
The expansion will also spur local economic growth by creating direct and indirect employment opportunities during both the construction and operations phases. It will benefit local suppliers, MSMEs, and foster entrepreneurship, driving socio-economic development.<\/p>\n
NGEL, a listed subsidiary of NTPC, leads the company\u2019s renewable capacity additions through both organic growth\u2014mainly via its wholly-owned subsidiary NREL\u2014and strategic partnerships with state governments and other central public sector undertakings. Currently, NGEL manages a portfolio of approximately 32 GW, comprising around 6 GW operational, 17 GW contracted or awarded, and a pipeline of 9 GW.<\/p>\n
