TFP Bureau, <\/i>Bilaspur, November 4, 2025: \u00a0A major train accident occurred near Bilaspur on Tuesday afternoon when a Korba-bound passenger train collided with a freight train between Gatora and Bilaspur stations, resulting in the death of six passengers and injuries to at least 25 others. The impact caused significant damage to the overhead wiring and signaling system, disrupting rail traffic and prompting an extensive rescue and relief operation.<\/p>\n

According to South East Central Railway officials, the accident occurred around 4:00 pm when the local MEMU train collided with a stationary goods train on the same track. The collision led to derailment of several coaches and severe damage to the locomotives. Rescue teams from the Railways, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local administration immediately rushed to the spot to evacuate trapped passengers and provide medical assistance. The injured were quickly shifted to nearby hospitals in Bilaspur and Gatora, where they are undergoing treatment.<\/p>\n

The Railway administration confirmed in an official bulletin that six people had lost their lives while five were seriously injured. Ex-gratia compensation of \u20b910 lakh each for the families of the deceased, \u20b95 lakh for those seriously injured, and \u20b91 lakh for passengers with minor injuries has been announced by the Railways. Relief operations are continuing on a war footing under the supervision of senior railway officials and district authorities.<\/p>\n

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, describing it as an \u201cextremely painful and distressing incident.\u201d Extending condolences to the bereaved families, the Chief Minister announced additional financial assistance of \u20b95 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased person and \u20b950,000 for each injured passenger. \u201cAll possible measures are being taken to ensure free and proper medical treatment for the injured, and relief operations are being conducted with utmost urgency,\u201d he said, adding that the state government and railway administration are working in close coordination.<\/p>\n

Collector Sanjay Agrawal and Superintendent of Police Rajneesh Singh reached the accident site shortly after the incident to oversee rescue efforts. Heavy machinery has been deployed to remove the mangled coaches and restore the damaged track. The railway authorities said that complete restoration may take several hours due to the extensive damage to the signaling and overhead equipment.<\/p>\n

Eyewitnesses described the scene as one of chaos and panic. Devkumar Dhuri, a passenger from Takhatpur, recounted, \u201cThere was a sudden jolt, and the train came to a violent stop. When I looked outside, I saw the engine had climbed on top of the goods train. People started shouting and jumping out with whatever belongings they could grab. Many were trapped, and we tried to pull them out before the rescue teams arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officials suspect that a signaling malfunction or human error could have caused the collision. The Railway Board has ordered a high-level investigation by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) to determine the exact cause and recommend preventive measures.<\/p>\n

The South East Central Railway has suspended train services on the affected route and diverted several express and passenger trains. Medical relief trains, ambulances, and emergency response teams were deployed from Bilaspur and Raipur within minutes of the accident. The Railways also issued helpline numbers for passengers and their families to seek information on those affected.<\/p>\n

Officials from the Railway Ministry said that restoration of traffic will be prioritized once all rescue operations are completed and technical clearance is obtained. \u201cOur first priority is to save lives and ensure proper medical treatment for all injured passengers,\u201d a senior railway spokesperson stated.<\/p>\n

The Bilaspur train accident has once again highlighted concerns over rail safety and signaling reliability in high-traffic zones.
